A side trip to Labor & Delivery

So, we're new at this. We're really new at this. And just when we thought we had it figured out, pregnancy throws us a curve ball. I woke up feeling crappy this morning...just plain yucky. I ate, showered, and got dressed...thinking all the while it would make me feel better. Turns out it didn't. I had tons of lower abdominal pain and lower back pain that would get really intense and then let up (but never went away). The phone nurse, who was her usual ever-so-helpful self...told me it was Braxton Hicks and I should drink a gatorade and wait one hour. She advised that if they didn't go away after about an hour, I could go to L&D to "get checked out". So...they did get a bit better after the gatorade and I slept on the couch for about 30 min.

And then, I sat up to eat. And it all started again...intense belly and back pains. So, we went to L&D. A very nice nurse hooked me up to the monitor and fed me two tylenol. After about 30 to 45 minutes of monitoring, she told us that I had maybe one small contraction...a normal thing for a woman at 31 weeks of pregnancy. So, she tested my urine and found a whopper of a UTI...

So long story short (yea, like I can tell a short story...) I was not in labor, just in pain from round ligament stretching (on the underside of my abdomen) and from the UTI (back pain). I felt sort of silly that I went to L&D for a UTI, but I wasn't sure.

Anyhow...we're all better now. The pain does come and go, but since I know what it is I can deal with it now. And, since I know this little one isn't coming this early...I feel better about it! Now to get on with the end of school (only two more papers to go!) and enjoy the spring weather!
